Everyday care
A daily routine for an 8 to 10 week old puppy
A useful routine alternates food, toilet opportunities, gentle activity and plenty of chances to rest. The daily planner dates nothing and sets no fixed exercise or nap quota. Treat its calculated toilet interval as a rough upper planning marker, while offering more frequent opportunities during training.
What belongs in an ordinary puppy day?
Start with waking, meals, toilet trips and a safe place to rest. Keep gentle play and reward-based learning short enough for the puppy to stay comfortable. A quiet gap in the plan can be used for rest; it is not a compulsory sleep block.
The eight-to-ten-week period does not make every puppy equally ready for the same activity. Follow the puppy's behavior and health advice, and change the routine when something is not working.
Why are there extra toilet opportunities?
The planner converts ten weeks to two approximate months using floor(weeks / 4.33), then adds one to obtain a three-hour rule of thumb. That does not mean the puppy should wait three hours whenever they need to go.
RSPCA recommends much more frequent training opportunities, including after meals, play and excitement. Waking, leaving, returning and bedtime are also useful cues. Take the puppy out sooner when needed and reward success promptly.

How are meals and flexible gaps handled?
The routine shares its meal rules with the feeding tool. Ten weeks falls in its four-meal stage. Wake and bed times determine the evenly spaced meal times; the last meal is planned three hours before bed.
The hourly view groups consecutive free hours into a flexible range. It does not prescribe continuous sleep, timed exercise or a guaranteed safe period alone.
What does the ten-week example produce?
Enter ten weeks, wake 07:00 and bed 22:00. The result includes the four meals and timed toilet markers below, plus a separate instruction for after-meal trips. Save, share and print include the generated routine.
Worked example
Age 10 weeks; wake 07:00; bed 22:00
- Approximate planning interval
- 3 hours
- Meals
- 07:00, 11:00, 15:00, 19:00
- Timed toilet markers
- 07:00, 10:00, 13:00, 16:00, 19:00, 22:00
Also offer trips after meals and other relevant cues. This is not a holding-capacity guarantee.

Common questions
More answers on this topic.
Is a free period a required nap?
No. It is flexible space for rest or gentle activity, with toilet trips as needed.
Can I wait until each calculated toilet time?
No. Offer opportunities sooner when needed and use the more frequent training guidance.
Does the entered age update every day?
No. The plan keeps the age entered; regenerate it when the puppy's needs change.
Are exact exercise minutes included?
No. The tool leaves activity duration flexible rather than inventing a quota.

Supports preparing a safe home and quiet rest area, finding a vet before arrival, familiar food and routines, and positive learning. Checklist dates are planning reminders.
In advice about short crating periods, describes a toilet rule of thumb of at least every three hours at two months, four hours at three months, and so on. This supports months plus one as a planning interval, not a promise that every puppy can wait that long in other settings.
Supports a chosen toilet area, regular opportunities and rewards. The close-to-door placement is the checklist specification's practical suggestion, not a prescribed distance.
